I still don't get it?
Maybe I'm missing something(most likely), but why did gdr go? Was it not making money to continue its upkeep, or matt just got sick of it. I dunno I just dont understand. I read the writeup by noricehere, and still don't get it.

Re: I still don't get it?
i think it had a little bit to do with everything ... lots of behind the scenes BS that we don't see or hear about ... ppl were fed up, pissed off, and other things were added into the factor including familys and friends ... idk if we will ever know all of the TRUE reasons unfortunately ...

Re: I still don't get it?
Like Kelly said, probably alot of things contributed to the shutting down of the site, and we may not really find out what straw broke the camel's back.
I read a couple of NoRice's posts where he was talking about the path of the 'racing internet' and how he was trying to keep gDR out of all that, I got the feeling there was something, some kind of change on the internet that made him throw up his hands or something.
I had no contact with him, so what I am writing is pure speculation.....but I think some of the flaming, junk talking, etc.... was wearing him down.
I could be wrong about that, it is just the perception I got from some of his last posts. There was a thread in the last day where he aluded to that point, wrote something about 'the attitude/comments in this thread is exactly what I am talking about' or something to that effect...wish I could remember exactly what he wrote, cause I felt like that in addition to spending more time with the family is what played a bigger part in closing gDR than anything.
the comments I am talking about wasn't relative to the lighting up he had with QuikFord......
But alas, what is past is prologue. Time to get on with the future and forge ahead!

YOU DEF COULD BE RIGHT.... BUT, I THINK THE PART I QUOTED FROM YOU - WHAT MARK HAD POSTED BACK TO THAT, WAS ALOT OF THE REASON THEY JUST SHUT IT DOWN WHEN THEY DID... I WAS UNDER THE IMPRESSION WE WOULD STILL BE ABLE TO POST TODAY... BUT IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY, IT WAS SAID THAT IF THINGS STARTED GETTING OUT OF CONTROL THEY WOULD PULL THE PLUG EARLIER... SO I DONT BLAME THEM FOR THAT. ITS JUST STILL SO UNREAL.

I think you are right about that.....I think emotions were getting involved from many sides. When alot of people are passionate about the same thing sometimes things don't come out right.
But you know......since everyone here remembers the quality of that site I think everyone knows that it can be done again, and over time, a new place will be as good or better.

64Duece needs to spill the beans on what he knows.
I dont think it was right we weren't told the truth why...but that is there choice. They have that right. I dont agree with it...But it is there decision.

to have a site thats better takes more dedication put into it then they did..and that is hard. Mark didn't work...he was out on dissabilty...he had nothing but time to cover events. U guys have to understand how much time they truely put into it...making sigs, pictures, Writing up stories, Members rides...Countlessssss hours. Countless. Most people dont have that kinda time on there hands. Mark was passionate about what he did....I know i would get sick and **** tired of doing it...covering every event...endless PM's from computer dumb people that cant figure shit out..it gets the best of you. Not right away...anyone can do it for a year or two. But 13 years....It would get to anyone i think. Just my opinion...i dont know the truth any more so then you guys do.
IT was a great site though with EXCELLENt Q8, 8.50 10.0..12.0 races. Mark Had taken thousands of pictures..thousandssssss. The amount of time he had into it...I dont think anyone could really understand. It was a full time job for him. Anyone can be a moderator and delete some posts, edit some shit. But to do it like they did..Takes more then you think.
But i wish whoever steps up the best...we do need a new site. Start out slow and see where it goes.

Re: I still don't get it?
who asked you?!?! haha j/k
nothing will ever be like gDR but something could be close or atleast try to be.
as far as the REAL truth about what happened with gDR - i honestly dont think anyone knows the God honest truth and i dont think anyone ever will... the only ones that know are Mark and Matt.

Qwik,
I wouldn't expect anyone to spill the beans really....some of the conversations may have been private, and people may have given their word not to repeat things.
IMO the best thing for those that are 'in the know' is to offer guidance here at this new place so that whatever the causes were/are for gDR to shut down are alleviated and avoided here.....that way this place will thrive for years to come-

Re: I still don't get it?
Quik,
I just read your last post, and you are exactly right, to run a site like that it takes a huge effort. Everything you alluded to is dead on the money, it is time consuming. Hopefully with this new site enough people can get involved for the common good and build it.
I had no idea Mark is disabled. His photographic work and write ups were top notch. Actually, I wouldn't be suprised if someone like NHRA offered him a job doing that, or Speed Sport News.

Re: I still don't get it?
o.k..........i was at pool league last nite when the shit storm happened and didn't see anything on GDR past 6pm. Sorry i missed the final hours of GDR.
As far as what I know about why and how.........well.........outta respect i'm not at liberty to say. Jeff and i had a 3 hr phone convo with Mark on Tues. morning so i know more than i cared too but i am appreciative that he felt comfortable enough to trust me with the info. Let sleeping dogs lie. RIP GDR.
As far as work goes for me we here at the shop gotta we spent most of this week on the phone and e-mailing back and forth about the GDR situation trying to come up with a solution , then into a "sit down and think about the future" mode and help and support mode. to say the least we got a lil behind here nad have some stuff to get out the door today. Give me some time to re-group here.
As far as going forward with a new site and the future....what has already happened with efforts by Mike and other is great. Can GDR be re-placed ? It shouldn't be , BUT , i think the torch can pass if done right in the spirit of GDR and if enough support , heart , and effort can be set forth by a larger group of people in a well organized fashion i think it can be as good and even go to the next level but it will take time. Gotta walk before we can race !
