internet is full of pictures of guys who took perfectly good running 302's apart to find the block split or a main saddle broken out of the block
buddy had a nitous 302 in the 9's that we wanted to step up and just change pistons , imagine our surprise when we pulled off the timing cover and bell housing and found the block split in half , ran fine though
johns right , after 500 hp its just a waiting game
he ran raced the car for 2 years,it even ran several 275 races.....it was built n tuned by HED out in north carolina ... i also have 2 friends that have stock block 302's in their car one had a procharger p1sc setup with a stick n made 589rwhp n has been raced n beat for the last 8 years, the other has also has a stock block with a S-trim made 550ish n hasnt broken it yet... i also know several people with stock bottom end 302's make serious power with turbo setups....i am building a stock bottom end turbo car now,so once i get it on the dyno i will ost the dyno numbers..
