Welcome back to racing everyone!! I know some of us were itching to get started back on Friday up at E-town, but unfortunately we have not figured out how to control the weather yet. Cecil County Dragway along with Finishline Performance have kicked off the 2009 Outlaw Street Car Shootout Series with success! All racing was kept to 1/8th mile on Saturday for safety reasons, due to high winds all day. A wise decision on the part of track officials! The rest of the weather was nice, the sun was out all day, and the track was hooking like no other.

Thank you to the Cecil County Dragway staff for access to the starting line and facility to cover this event. A big thanks to the tower staff for providing a copy of the results to us. Also, usual, thanks to Dave O'Donnell @ Finish Line Performance for giving us access and putting on such a killer race program.

7.50 Index

The first shot at this class brought about a pair of badass rides we are used to seeing from the big tire classes, John Schroeder in his '02 Camaro and Pete Pace in their bad blown 68 Camaro. The seasoned veteran Schroeder takes the win with a 4.985

The class exploding in popularity in the area was cut down to a 5.45 Index due to 1/8th mile racing. This posed a challenge for the racers to get their tunes right in order to run the number and avoid a breakout situation.

Round 1
Elimnations started out with an easy win for Mike Thompson, running his 5.583 over Joe Timinski's 6.658. TJ Kasper, the reigning champ who qualified last, took an upset win over #1 qualifier Mike Cerminaro who went out with a foul. His breakout 5.423 could have easily put him on the trailer against the #1 qualifier. Adam Smith in his '68 Cuda took the next matchup, running a 5.57@125 over Ron Rhodes' 5.932@121. Michael Conway took the next pair, and not only did he catch Robert Mayo sleeping at the tree, his 5.483@118 would prove to be the closest number to the 5.45 index for the entire first round. Danny Clark's baaaaad turbo Chevy II did the deed in the following pair with a 5.69@117 over Joe Maddesi's 5.85@117. Check out the gallery for Madessi's kick ass wheelstand. The next pass with veteran Craig Buscio's orange Nova and Benny Byrd's turbo 85 RX7 ended up being a double breakout situation, with Craig closer to the number, lucky for him since Benny had him at the tree. For the final matchup of the round, Angelo Valla's 72 Vette gave the fans a show with a fantastic wheelstand, and also a round win with a 5.699@127 over Brent Beachley's 5.77@118. Bill Cannon, #2 qualifier, took a single to finish up the round.

Round 2
Round 2's first matchup started with Kid Kwik TJ Kasper cutting a light on Adam Smith, then getting on the brakes at the traps to advance on to the semi-finals a 5.52@110. Smith ended up breaking out by a mere .004 of a second. Mike Thompson broke out in the second pair with a 5.39@129, but he had no chance against Craig Buscio who put up a .046 light and a 5.451 elapsed time. Bill Cannon had someone to race this round, and he took the win light against Michael Conway who broke put by .007. Cannon was on point with a .014 light and 5.471@128 elapsed time. For the final pair of round 2, the wheels up Blue '72 Vette took another win, running a 5.63@128 against Danny Clark's 5.69@136.

Semi-finals
Four cars remained; Bill Cannon (68 Camaro), Angelo Valla (72 Vette), TJ Kasper (93 Mustang), and Craig Buscio (62 Nova). The first matchup pitted Cannon against Valla. Valla took Cannon at the start with a .030 light vs. .063, but Cannon was on point with the number and his 5.461@129 versus Valla's 5.503@129 gave him the win light and a pass to the finals. Next up, TJ and Buscio, had all eyes on the track to watch the two masters at work. Craig, looking to take the Kid on the tree because he knows his opponent does not slack in the aspect, lit the red bulbs with an oh so close -.005 reaction time. Both cars were full throttle to the 1/8th, TJ with a 5.395@129 and Craig with a 5.338@132.

Finals
Both of the finalists know their way to the winner's circle, with Cannon coming fresh off a win from the 2008 Shakedown @ E-town and TJ being the defending champ at 3 local tracks. The air was tense as everyone looked on to see if the Shakedown Champ could knock the Kid off. Bill's reaction was early, lighting the red with a -0.19 reaction time. He would have had TJ, Bill's e/t was 5.458@129 which would have done the deed against TJ's breakout 5.370@129.29

Outlaw 10.5

Image Image Image Image

With some 10.5 teams still scrambling to get their new toys put together, and testing the new combinations, we had eight badass rides that had their stuff together turn out for Saturday's race. 1/8th mile is always the name of the game at Cecil's Outlaw Street Car shootout, and the track was in prime condition for these big horsepower beasts to lay down the power on their 10.5" tires. The first two rounds of qualifying had everyone on their feet, with Tom Kasper running a personal best and track record 4.37 in their newly acquired Team Christy & Kasper Mustang. Mobley Motorsports and driver Chuck Ulsch had something to say about that though, after fixing some issues from Qualifying round #1, they layed down a 4.20@190 in round #2 of qualifying to reset the record and show everyone they meant business.

Round 1
First to the line was a pair of twin turbo mustangs, Larry Wood and Tom Kasper. Larry got out of shape midway, and Tom took the win with a personal best 4.367@180. Next up was Dale COllins in his mint '02 Camaro versus Rick Grove in his '69 Camaro. Collins got out of shape early but pedaled it and made an effort to beat Grove to the stripe, but his efforts did not pay off. Grove's 4.79@142 put him into the semi finals. Mike Bradford in his sick looking chameleon Mustang was next to the line against Mo Hall's '94 Camaro. Hall had a rough start with a little bit of bouncing coming off the line, Bradford sailed to the finishline running a 4.75@156 to Hall's 4.90@159. Last up, Dan Fiedles knew he would have his hands full against Chuck Ulsch and Team Mobley. Fiedles had some trouble while Ulsch flew by him with a 4.225@189 pass.

Semi-finals
Another pair of mustangs to lead off the round, this time Tom Kasper versus Mike Bradford. These two put on a show for the fans with a close race, KAsper a 4.40@167 to advance against Bradford's 4.598@156. Ulsch's car, still on rails, lays down another quick pass with a 4.21@189 against Rick Rgove's 4.55@166.

Finals
Talk about a crowd pleaser! Two of the baddest rides in Outlaw 10.5 in a heads up final. Tommy had Chuck on the tree, but Ulsch sailed on by with a 4.20@189 pass to take the win for the day. You HAVE to see the video of Ulsch's car, it leaves hard and keeps on screaming with the wheels up all the way to the end of the track. Scratching your head about Tom's 4.81 pass after a day of 4.37's? Turns out when arming the chutes, he also hit the linelock switch as well. Lesson learned for Team Christy & Kasper, they will be headed back to the shop with some wire cutters to take care of that unused linelock, and a ton of knowledge learned about their new ride.

Drag Radial

Image Image Image Image

Like Outlaw 10.5, eight impressive Drag Radial teams made it to the show. These teams have a tough task putting down so much power on a radial tire, but somehow they are getting it done. Good to see Paul Major and team get the Vette back together and racing after some unfortunate happenings late last season. The always dangerous team CoRuPt and Alex Vrettos were in the house with some new toys, fresh from testing and ready for competition.

Round 1
The first pair of Drag Radial brought a jaw dropping wheelstand from Jeff Bumper that put it on the bumper. Once he had all four back on the ground, Don Barnett was way down the track already, running a 5.299@137. In the next matchup, Quentin Methany vs. Bull Outlea, Methany was the one who was out -- running an impressive 5.09@142 against Outlea's 6.15@113. Paul Major was next, versus Brian Krzenski. Major got a little squirrely off the line, but got back in it and zoomed by Brian. Major's 5.847@115 was good to go against Krzenski's 5.947@121. The last matchup of the round brought #1 Qualifier and the always dangerous Alex Vrettos against Duane Durbin's 68 camaro. Durbin's Camaro did not make it to the beams, and Vrettos ended up smoking the tires a few hundred out on his single pass

Semi-Finals
Quentin Methany layed down the fasted Drag Radial pass in Eliminations today, with a 5.031@142 to take the win over Barnett's 6.633. The last matchup was two of the big dogs, Vrettos versus Major. vrettos' car was on a rail and zoomed to a 5.058@140 win over Major who was beat at the starting line. Judging by the times, the final matchup should be close!

Finals
Both Methany and Vrettos were within .02 of each other on the last round, so we were all expecting an exciting final. The racers did not disappoint! Methany treed Alex by about .16, but Alex zoomed on by and took the win light with a 5.221@130 against Methany's 5.58@134.
