5/10/2009 Maple Grove - Naturally Aspirated Shootout

Post by iceman »

We had the privilege of being invited to Maple Grove on Mother's day for the opening race of the Naturally Aspirated Shootout series. I have never personally attended a Naturally Aspirated Shootout race, but let me tell you, I will not be missing another one if I can help it !! This race was AWESOME!! These racers were hangin the tires all day long, giving me something to shoot and the fans something to drop their jaws at. This day was special, not only because it was Mother's day, but because of the extra classes being run. In addition to the normal PRO N/A, 10.5 N/A, N/A Drag Radial, and All Motor Index, ther were also 8.50 Index, Outlaw Drag Radial, and Outlaw 10.5 classes.

Be sure to check out the N/A SHootout Web site for much more info on the race.

Pro N/A

These cars are wiiiiiicked fast! In the first round, Thomas Miller put on the red bulb with a -.021 light, as John Gaydosh zoomed on to a 7.621 ET and a pass to round #2. The next pairing brought about 2 red bulbs, Rich Scioscia's being less late with a -.003 light, lucky as his competitor Randy Harshman was on a tear and layed down a 7.416 pass. To join the club, Merv Moyer Jr. also went red on his bye but put an impressive 7.406 on the boards.

Round 2
John Gaydosh cut down the tree with a .004 light, but Merv Moyer drove around him and his 7.424 pass was good against Gaydosh's 8.038. Rich Scioscia took the green light and coasted down, on his way to the finals.

Finals
Rich did not make the staging beams, and Merv Moyer Jr. had a bye. He took off hard but lifted halfway down the track... in the winner's circle he told us all that it was hard to do, but the boss made him! Better off to save that motor for the rest of the season, good call bud.

All Motor Index
There were way too many cars for me to go round by round with the results, but I will give you some highlights of this exciting class. For those that don't know how it works, there are indexes from 9.50 up to 13.00, all cars leave on a pro tree. Faster cars will get the starting delay when lined up against slower. Many of these guys are seasoned index racers and are absolutely deadly racers.

Again too much for me to go pair by pair, to see the full results, click on the [urk=http://gonedragracing.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=252&pos=0]run sheets here[/url]

Round 1
Scott Dalrymple - .023 r/t and 11.033 on 11.00 dial-in
Mike Romeo - 10.012 on 10.00 dial-in
Mark Plucinski - 9.993 on a 10.00 dial-in, saved by a double breakout
Carey Cable - did not red light
Al Miller - 10.074 on 10.00 dial-in

Round 2
Mike Romeo - red lights and runs a 10.047 on 10.00 index
Al Miller - 10.005 w/ .131 r/t no good against Mike Sodano's 9.514 and .099 light
Mark Plucinski - 10.004 w/ .011 light on a 10.00 dial-in

Round 3
Carey Cable - 9.999 pass (second of the season) saved by George Walleigh's red light
John Warehime 10.530 w/ .035 r/t against Tom Wood 10.019 but .142 light

Round 4
By this round, obviously, only the very dangerous racers remained in the mix. First up, Carey Cable took on John Warehime, both of whom have been on a tear all day and close to their numbers. This time, Carey and his .026 light w/ 10.041 E/T will do the trick against John's 10.583 pass. Dan Walleigh, #2 qualifier, cut an awesome .004 light and ran a 10.520 pass on a 10.50 dial-in, pretty much impossible for Jeff Hughes to touch. Hughes went red and also baaaaarely broke out with a 9.485 on a 9.50 dial-in. To finish up this round was a jaw-dropping package, Cliff Sebring put up a 12.003 pass with a .015 light. It would have been close if Michael Sodano did not red light by -.026, as he put up a 9.504 light on a 9.50 dial-in - WOW!

Semi-finals
Carey Cable pulled up against Cliff Sebring, and we did see a red light come on but it was not Carey's (just trying to motivate you buddy :) ) it was Cliff's. Carey ran a 10.018 pass on a 10.00 dial-in, showing he belonged in the finals. Cliff went -.003 red and broke out with a 11.975 pass. Dan Walleigh coasted through this round, saving his energy.

Finals
Carey and Dan pulled up to the beams, bringing new meaning to "going rounds" as this was their sixth round of the day. Dan got the jump on the tree with a .014 light, Carey left a half second later when his tree dropped, his reaction time not as good with a .086. The win light came on in Dan Walleigh's lane, a double breakout situation. Dan ran 10.486 on a 10.50 dial, to Carey's 9.966. Good job fellas!

It does look sweet in the pics, and so does that old geezer Lee's launching wagon, he must have left an old engineblock in the back of it to get it that high, lol Lee.

Hey 55 Project, which car are you talking about?

I am trying to get to know more people's names, I am terrible with names, introduce yourself next time.

Hey Seth,

I'm Blake and my daughter is Nicole. She does all the racing right now, i'm just the builder and pit crew.. :D She has the 69 T/A clone ( one of your pics > mgr5102009-040.jpg) I was going to post it, but i'm having comp problems right now..
We were both with the old GDR for many years and i'm sure we'll be here for many also..
