Gaborik’s knee cut by skate in Rangers practice

GREENBURGH, New York (AP)—Marian Gaborik(notes) limped off at practice on Tuesday after the New York Rangers’ leading scorer was cut on the right knee by the ice skate of goalie Henrik Lundqvist(notes) in a collision.

Gaborik skated in on Lundqvist during a breakaway drill and tried to jump over his teammate’s outstretched leg when contact was made. The Slovakian right wing, who has a team-high 35 goals and 69 points, fell to the ice and stayed down for a few moments.

“I thought he was joking,” Lundqvist said. “My skate caught his knee. Hopefully he’ll be OK.”

Gaborik skated off slowly with assistance and didn’t put weight on his right leg. He received stitches at the practice facility, but didn’t require X-rays. He wasn’t available to speak to reporters.

Gaborik’s status for Wednesday’s home game against Nashville wasn’t immediately clear. He’s also slated to play for Slovakia at the Vancouver Olympics.

“Right now, that’s all we think it is,” assistant coach Jim Schoenfeld said. “It’s not like it’s a twist to the groin or the knee. It’s just a laceration.”

Gaborik, who will turn 28 on Sunday, is in the first season of a five-year, $37.5 million deal with the Rangers. After scoring a career-high 42 goals in the 2007-08 season with Minnesota, Gaborik was limited to 17 games last season because of hip surgery.

He has missed two games this season, but Gaborik played more than 65 only one time in his final five seasons with Minnesota. Gaborik has scored at least 30 goals in six of his nine NHL seasons.

The Rangers have three games this week before the NHL takes a two-week Olympic break.

now why the hell would the flyers try to get turco, that would be a dum trade and a lose. turco is old and has back problems what is wrong with Leighton he has proved he is a great backup. i guess they wont make any moves like last year before the deadline.

Didnt get to see much of the game tonite (its going into OT) right now. but 2 goals on 12 shots.. what a joke!!

Add that into that missed knee to knee on carcillo. Not a doubt in my mind if that said crosby or Ovi some one would be in the box. :nopity:

Lets see how overtime goes...

i think when giving the option 1) fighting some one or 2) keeping your hands down and getting a 4 minute powerplay i hope every one would make theright decision. And on top of that just saying no to orr threw off his whole game. he looked like he was lost out there

devils vs the worse team in the league. and get shutout what a joke that team has been. the rangers came back to play the top 5 teams in the east and only lost 1 regulation game. yea only losing to the best team in the league in regulation. i cant wait till the next game. well what i should say is that they had to play the 4 best teams in the east because the next rangers game is going to be a joke :fyou:

PHILADELPHIA — A year ago, when presented with a similar opportunity, Dan Carcillo might have fought Colton Orr three times in the same game and been showered before the game ended.

It didn't happen Sunday.

Now a mainstay on the Flyers' top line, Carcillo proved discretion might be the better part of valor when he allowed Orr to sit and stew in the penalty box while the Flyers methodically picked apart the Toronto Maple Leafs with a 3-1 victory to open a crucial four-game homestand.

"That guy, I'm never going to fight him," Carcillo said. "He doesn't really do anything unless someone fights him. I knew he was going to run me. I sucked him into a few (penalties) and, luckily, we scored a little later. We have bigger things to worry about."

The Flyers were well aware Orr would try to stir up things for the last-place Leafs and he did early, shoving Carcillo hard into the boards in front of the Flyers bench. Carcillo, who twice led the NHL in penalty minutes, hardly flinched and Orr was slapped with roughing and cross-checking minors.

We don't want to fight that guy," goalie Michael Leighton said. We want to leave him on the ice."

The Flyers failed to score on the long man-advantage, but when Orr took a senseless run at Leighton, driving him back into his own net, Orr again went to the box and Carter capitalized on a heads-up pass from rugged defenseman Chris Pronger.
